NEWARK, De. -- The Cape Henlopen Viking Football team's underdog run in DIAA 3A State playoffs came to an end at the University of Delaware earlier tonight, as the Salesianum Sals took home the State Championship with a 45-17 victory.

Through one half of a play, this one looked like it was going to be a tooth-and-nail fight to the finish. After Cape's Maurki James got the scoring started with a four-yard touchdown reception from Jameson Tingle midway through the first quarter, the rest of the first half was a back-and-forth battle.

After Salesianum kicked a game-tying field goal with 11 seconds remaining in the second quarter, the game went into the break tied at 10.

The second half, however, was all Sals, as they outscored the Vikings 35-7 to pull away and secure a thorough victory.

For Salesianum, this is their first state title in a decade, as they last captured a DIAA State Title after defeating Middletown 23-7 in 2013.

For Cape Henlopen, they finish the 2023 campaign with an overall record of 9-4.
