Why you can't watch some high school playoff and championship games on DSN
If you've tried to watch your favorite high school's playoff or championship game on the Delmarva Sports Network and couldn't find it, you're not alone, and there's a reason why.
How high school sports broadcast rights work
During the regular season, broadcast and streaming rights are controlled by individual schools. The Delmarva Sports Network has worked hard to secure non-exclusive broadcast and streaming rights with nearly every public and private high school on the Delmarva Peninsula. That means fans can enjoy regular-season coverage across Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia on DSN+, our apps, and our free over-the-air and cable TV channel. However, playoff and championship rights are different.
Who owns playoff and championship rights
Once the postseason begins, the rights no longer belong to the schools. They are then owned and managed by each state's governing body for high school athletics:
Delaware: Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA)
Maryland: Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA)
Virginia: Virginia High School League (VHSL)
These organizations have awarded exclusive playoff and championship broadcast and streaming rights to the NFHS Network. That means if the NFHS chooses to cover a game, DSN is not permitted to stream or broadcast it, even if we aired the same matchup or school during the regular season.
What DSN can air
In some cases, DSN may still be allowed to air or stream a playoff game, but only if the NFHS does not. When those opportunities arise, we work quickly with schools and state associations to bring those games to viewers on DSN and DSN+.
DSN's commitment
Our mission has always been to celebrate Delmarva's student-athletes, schools, and communities: Local Teams. Big Dreams.
We proudly cover over 70 schools across the Delmarva Peninsula during every sports season. We'll continue to advocate for high quality coverage of local sports and explore every opportunity to bring you these major live games from across the peninsula.
