It was a back-and-forth battle over the bridge, but in the end it was the Seahawks who would prevail and move on to the next round after a score of 70-61.
EDGEWATER, Md. — The South River Seahawks punched their ticket to the region finals after a hard-fought 70-61 victory over the James M. Bennett Clippers on Tuesday night. The game started with an early surge from the Clippers, but South River’s Jonah Hall quickly answered, knocking down back-to-back three-pointers to give the Seahawks their first lead at 6-3. Jayden Colon kept JMB in the fight, converting an and-one play to put the Clippers ahead briefly. The first quarter ended in a tight battle, with Hall tying it up at 16 with another deep shot.
The Seahawks gained momentum in the second quarter, as Jaden McDuffie’s floater put them back on top. South River held onto the lead at halftime and extended it in the third quarter, building a 35-28 advantage. However, James M. Bennett refused to back down, with Zakai Smullen sparking a comeback by converting a steal into an easy layup. Kyler Dickerson also made key plays, drawing a foul and sinking free throws to keep the Clippers within striking distance. Smullen continued his defensive dominance, grabbing another steal and scoring to give JMB a brief lead heading into the fourth quarter at 44-43.
